| Info: | If the commercial succes of the Rap'Sures in the nineteen
eighties showed that holyhiphop had a viable place in the
christian music scene, then DC Talk was the force behind
accepting the musical style within the industry in the
beginning of the nineteen nineties.
Crossover
Although DC Talk is more known for their crossover sound of
rock and rap from their highly succesful "Jesus Freak" album
(1995) they did start out as a hip hop band. Just listen to
their self titled debut album from 1989, but their rap sound
was soon to be mixed with pop music as the third record
"Free At Last" proves in 1992.
Bestselling
This would become one of their bestselling albums, 1,100,000
records, only to be surpassed by Jesus Freak at 1,245,000
records.
Members
DC Talk consisting of the members: TobyMac, adding to the
rap factor in the band's sound, Michael Tait, turning more
to the rock side and Kevin Max showing his heartfelt
emotions in the songs finally did make a difference.
Rock
The sound of DC Talk would evolve in nearly a decade from
hiphop to a melodic rock band as their last album
"Supernatural" showed in 1998.
The year 2001 saw the release of solo material from
bandmembers Michael Tait and TobyMac with TobyMac staying
the closest to DC Talk's hip hop roots.
Dove Awards
In 1991 the group received a Dove award at the GMA Awards
ceremony for "Nu Thang" (1990) in the category "Hip Hop/Rap
album of the Year".

DC Talk won several times in the category "Rap/Hip Hop
Recorded Song of the Year" at the GMA awards ceremony in:
- 1992: "I luv Rap Music" - Nu Thang (1990).
- 1993: "Can I Get A Witness" - Nu Thang (1990).
- 1994: Socially Acceptable - Free at Last (1992).
- 1995: " Luv Is A Verb" - Free at Last (1992).
