shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with
milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters,
and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the
lord, and shall water the valley of shittim."
Raised
The rapper was raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he lead a
gangsta lifestyle on the streets. NuWine eventually moved to
Houston, Texas and started rapping to support his family.
Debut Album
He teams up with lil' Raskull and they both get signed to
the label Grapetree Records and so NuWine's debut album
"Da Bloody 5th" was released in 1996.
Win-o Records
But he loses the rights over his record to Grapetree and
therefore quickly founded his own label called Win-o Records
and published four albums.
Real Deal Records
In 1999 he released his new album "Ghetto Mission" on
Evander Holyfield's label Real Deal Records. Even with two
singles released from the album this did not become the
success both had hoped for.
No Label
Although NuWine's albums had songs with christian faith
based content. He did not operate in that field alone. He
states: "My music is designed for the thug and they won't
pick it up in the Gospel section. I've found that my music
doesn't need a label. Over 48 secular video shows,
including those on BET, have picked up my video simply
because I didn't put a label on it. I know that my music
isn't designed for church people, but to save and educate
souls".
Rated R
In 2003 he releases an album together with Daz Dillinger a
producer and rapper from Death Row Records fame, the old
label of Dr. Dre and 2Pac Shakur. In 2004 NuWine's talks
about his new album Rated R: "We taking it to the next
level man, nobody wants to drink with me. None of these cats
are ready to drink the new wine..."
Mainstream sound
The next year NuWine seems to have turned his back towards
his faith in God. The song "Shake Yo Sally" from his album
"Hate me" contains the usual sexual explicit content found
on most hip hop records. About this change NuWine says
preachers turned his back on him, when he got a divorce in
1999.
Support
His choice to make spiritual hip hop was only to support his
family. But he claims he has not lost his faith, but this
different NuWine is only born out of commercial purposes:
"People didn't realize that I made music for money,
period. I was blessed with a gift, and I used that gift to
provide for the family. [...] If anybody asked me if I
believed in God or Jesus, I would say yes," he says. "I
still believe in them with all my heart." Although NuWine
has left the Holyhiphop scene for his own reasons his work
in Christ shall not be forgotten.
