Review:There’s a difference between reviving an old school sound and just plain sounding old. Unfortunately, The Headphone Music EP from Vocab Malone and the Prism Cru falls under the latter category when perhaps aiming for the former.

Instead of simply passing through familiar hiphop territory in order to rekindle memories of the culture’s golden age (a la KJ52’s “We Rock The Mic”), Malone and company seem content to park the car and set up camp. As such, the listener is fed tired kung-fu samples in the intro, a ubiquitous guest appearance MC in Vex da Vortex, a hackneyed geography-based hook (“To all my peoples in the West/East/South/North…”), and an early Michael Jackson sample that has been used by other artists two and three times before.

It could be argued that some of these flaws should be overlooked and are outshined by the brighter points on the record. DJ Epic’s tablework throughout the piece isn’t half bad, illtripp’s production on several tracks is up to par as always, and Vex’s verse on “No Challengers” is fierce. However, John Reuben’s recycling Jacko’s “I Can’t Help It” from Off the Wall to produce “Divine Inspiration” is simply unforgivable. Astute fans of the music will note the sample has already been used in gospel hiphop on Peace 586’s “Where Ya At?” and in the secular realm before that with De La Soul’s “Breakadawn.”

Instead of finding The Headphone Music EP to be the freshest new junk release from Vocab Malone and the Prism Cru, most listeners will be disappointed to realize that it sounds a lot like something they’ve had in their Walkmans once before.
